Digital Storytelling
I recently learned about Digital Storytelling as an education tool. The author of the forum on this topic explained that there are really no limits to how digital story telling can be implemented into the classroom.
Throughout history, the oral transfer and exchange of knowledge has been the main stay of education. Digital story telling builds on this model, allowing students to not only express themselves with words, but allows them to use their own voices, and apply visual digital content, creating a multidimensional experience.
This all sounds very exciting, but like any new form of technology, do we fully understand the implications and effect digital story telling will have on education.
I believe that as instructors, it is important to stay current with our rapidly changing and very technical world. If we are forced to teach through new multimedia technologies, it keeps us fresh, rather than being left in the dust wondering what happened to the traditional textbook methods from which we learned.
This would be a good topic to become proficient at as the world becomes so reliant on digital stimulation via the YouTube era. This could be by instructors, in an effort to create a visual effect or emotional appeal in the minds of students, which aids in creating a 'connection' to previous knowledge, ultimately leading to better memory retention. It could also serve as a great new method for students to present projects that may have traditionally been in a poster or report format. How exciting is this?!
